The disturbances, which have spread to multiple cities over the past week, stem from false online claims that the suspect in a tragic stabbing, which claimed the lives of three young girls, was a Muslim asylum seeker.

Tensions escalated when Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), posted that a British “civil war is inevitable.” This comment prompted a swift rebuke from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, stating there was “no justification” for such remarks.

Musk responded with a series of posts questioning the British government’s handling of the riots and referencing disputed claims about policing, which have been widely refuted by lawmakers and police officials.

Justice Minister Heidi Alexander condemned Musk’s comments as “deeply irresponsible,” emphasizing that talk of civil war is unacceptable. She urged those with public platforms to exercise their influence responsibly, citing the serious injuries to police officers and property damage occurring during the riots.

The unrest follows the murder of three girls, aged six to nine, at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party in Southport, northwest England. The suspect, 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana, was born in Britain to parents reportedly of Rwandan origin.

This incident has highlighted the complex interplay between social media, misinformation, and public unrest, raising questions about the responsibilities of tech leaders and platforms during times of social tension.
