LAHORE – The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) of Punjab has reportedly rearrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of National Assembly (MNA) Haji Imtiaz Ahmed at Multan International Airport on Thursday. Officials claim the lawmaker was attempting to board a flight to Qatar when apprehended.

Ahmed’s whereabouts had been unknown since July 31, when armed individuals attacked a convoy on the new Shadiwal Road near Gujranwala, freeing him from ACE custody. The anti-corruption body had initially detained Ahmed over allegations of receiving a Rs2 million commission in a development scheme.
According to an ACE spokesperson, the incident occurred as officials were transporting Ahmed back to Gujranwala from Mianwali, where he had been taken for the recovery of alleged illicit funds. Approximately a dozen armed men in three vehicles reportedly intercepted the official vehicle and opened fire, forcing ACE personnel to seek cover as the assailants fled with the MNA.
The case had sparked controversy in political circles, with PTI lawmakers raising the matter in parliament and seeking legal intervention for Ahmed’s safe recovery. During a recent National Assembly session, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan had referred to Ahmed as “a forcefully disappeared person,” questioning the speaker about the MNA’s whereabouts and treatment.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq had informed PTI representatives that police reports indicated Ahmed was not in the custody of law enforcement or the ACE. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also pledged to personally investigate the alleged disappearance.
Ahmed, who secured his seat as an independent candidate backed by PTI in the February 8 general elections, had previously served as an MNA on a PTI ticket in 2018.
The ACE’s claim of Ahmed’s rearrest at Multan Airport marks a significant development in this high-profile case, which has drawn attention to issues of lawmaker security and the ongoing tensions between PTI and government institutions.
