PIA Privatization Reveals Overstaffing: 304 Employees per Aircraft

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing scrutiny as its privatization process unveils significant overstaffing issues. Recent data shows the national carrier employs 304 staff members per plane, raising concerns about operational efficiency.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 34 aircraft, including 13 on dry lease. PIA’s total workforce stands at 10,323, comprising 7,399 regular employees and 2,924 outsourced workers.

These figures emerged during a briefing to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Aviation, where multiple challenges in Pakistan’s aviation sector were discussed.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) reported budget constraints hindering the upgrade of outdated equipment at 22 airports nationwide. Similarly, the Airport Security Force (ASF) cited funding issues but noted ongoing efforts to acquire new security devices.

Committee members highlighted several infrastructural problems, including cracks in the parking area at Allama Iqbal International Airport. They also questioned the licensing processes for pilots and aero-medical staff.

PIA and private airlines, including Air Blue and Air Sial, faced criticism for frequent flight delays. The committee urged them to improve their punctuality and service reliability.

In response to evolving aviation needs, the PCAA is developing new policies to regulate drone usage. Additionally, as part of a World Bank project, plans are underway to install new weather radars and automatic weather stations. These upgrades aim to enhance weather forecasting capabilities, benefiting farmers and various state departments.

The ongoing privatization of PIA, coupled with proposed infrastructure improvements and regulatory changes, is expected to address these challenges and boost the performance of Pakistan’s aviation industry.
