In a stunning development, Pakistan’s military has taken three retired officers into custody in connection with the ongoing case against former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Thursday that these individuals are being held for “actions prejudicial to military discipline.”

This latest move comes on the heels of the unprecedented arrest of Gen Hameed earlier this week, shattering long-held perceptions about the untouchability of former spy chiefs in Pakistan. The army initiated court martial proceedings against Gen Hameed following allegations of misconduct raised by Kanwar Moeez Khan, owner of Islamabad’s Top City housing society.
The ISPR statement hinted at a broader investigation, noting that inquiries into “certain retired officers and their accomplices for fomenting instability at the behest of and in collusion with vested political interests are continuing.”
Political Reactions and Implications:
Former Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah called the development “very unusual,” stating that such high-level accountability was previously unheard of. He suggested this move could enhance public confidence in the military’s internal checks and balances.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif speculated on Gen Hameed’s potential involvement in recent political events, including the May 9 riots following PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest. Asif remarked, “For a person who exercised immense and unlimited power to take a backseat causes ulcers to them.”
Background of the Case:
The military formed an inquiry committee in April to investigate allegations against Gen Hameed. These claims stem from a Supreme Court directive in November 2023, which instructed Kanwar Moeez Khan to seek redress through proper channels, including the Ministry of Defence.
The case involves serious accusations, including claims that Gen Hameed orchestrated raids on Top City offices and Khan’s residence. The petitioner alleges the confiscation of valuables and subsequent attempts at mediation by Gen Hameed’s brother.
Gen Hameed’s Controversial Past:
The former spymaster has been a central figure in numerous political controversies over the past decade. His tenure saw allegations of judicial manipulation, involvement in political convictions, and disputes over TTP repatriation.
This case marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s military accountability landscape, potentially setting new precedents for addressing misconduct allegations against high-ranking officers.
