Gaza Death Toll Rises as Israeli Strikes Target Schools and Hospital

Israeli air raids on two schools and a hospital in Gaza have resulted in at least 44 Palestinian fatalities and numerous injuries, according to the Palestinian official news agency. The Hamas-run government media office reports that Israel has targeted 172 “designated shelters,” primarily schools housing displaced families, over the past 10 months.

Palestinian media footage showed casualties, including children, being rushed to ambulances from the blast-damaged schools. The Israeli military claims it struck a Hamas military compound “embedded in the schools,” while Hamas denies using civilian institutions for military purposes.

The Al-Aqsa Hospital compound in Deir Al-Balah was also hit, causing a fire and injuring at least 18 people, with five reported dead. Israeli forces say they targeted a militant engaged in “terror activities” at the site.

Additional Israeli strikes killed three Palestinians in Deir Al-Balah, eight in Jabalia camp, and three in a car in Gaza City. Residents near Khan Yunis and Rafah reported receiving evacuation orders from the Israeli military.

Palestinian health officials state that at least 39,550 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.

Diplomatic efforts in Cairo ended without progress, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisting on retaining control over border areas with Egypt and northern Gaza access. Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri accused Netanyahu of being uninterested in a ceasefire, warning of potential escalation.

Regional tensions have intensified following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, with both Hamas and Iran accusing Israel and vowing retaliation.

The ongoing strikes and shelling in Gaza continue to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region, with international calls for de-escalation growing louder.
